U-367 ("Broken Submarine") German WW2 Uboot

  • Location: Baltic Sea, Hel peninsula

  • Maximum depth: 67 m

  • No. of photographs: 14 000

This U-boat (type VIIC) was undergoing trainings on Gdansk Bay, when suddenly it disappeared at night on 16.03.1945 with all crew. Only after the war was over, its fate has been connected with operations of a soviet minelayer submarine L-21. It was re-discovered in 2001 by Maritime Office in Gdynia. Hydrographic research conducted in the following years showed that it's a wreck of a U-boat, most probably type VIIC, broken in half at the conning tower. It was named OP Przełamany (Broken Submarine). It took many years until finally, in 2013, it was identified by Baltictech divers in cooperation with Daniel Pastwa as U-367.

As you can see on the model, the wreck is broken at the conning tower - result of hitting a mine. It is possible to look into the break, where various valves and pipings can be seen. Both bow and stern raise above the bottom. In the stern section, two big propellers and a double rudder can be seen. Around the conning tower there are many scattered elements of the U-boat and its equipment. There is a periscope protruding up from the conning tower. The whole deck is still covered with wooden boards.

As the visibility on this wreck is usually very poor, it took me five attempts to finally have acceptable conditions (variable visibility 3 - 5 meters). The scanning was done over one dive with almost 1 hour bottom time (3 hours total dive time).
